What's for lunch?

Help! Help me, parents of toddlers! What do you feed your two-year old for lunch? I am tired of making Small Boy hot lunches. When can I stop giving him hot lunches? And I'm not looking for the Swiss answer to that question, because the Swiss answer to that question would be "When he marries a good woman (at which point he may or may not move out of the house) who will take over the cooking of hot lunches." Seriously. What do you feed your little ones at lunch time?

Haha, I am Swiss, to, for what its worth..my son gets to eat a lot of "cold" food because apparently I am too lazy to cook two warm meals a day. So here we go: "Birchermüesli" is a favorite of his, as well as "Gschwellti" (ok, this one is boiled whole potatoes with just everything you can find in the fridge, like tomatoes, cheese, ham...but you could exchange the potatoes for bread),then of course sandwiches of any variety you can think of.

I hate to tell you, but it doesn't get any easier when they get older. They hit these growth spurts and eat RIDICULOUS amounts of food!

During the weekend I usually make a big pot of soup or stew that I can serve for lunches during the week. That and whole grain muffins, which keep well and seem to actually fill them up.

I'll pop by later to see what other people's suggestions are-- I'm always looking for new inspiration! :-)

I make lots of homemade soups so he gets veggies. He drinks soup in a bowl, or at least he sort of learned to over time. It took a while. He gets a little bit of bread with it too. Soups are easy and you can freeze individual portions in baby food jars and microwave them fast. He gets soup at dinner (souper) time!

Otherwise lunch is a total free for all because he's soooo picky and never eats! I just want him to eat so I try to make kid friendly food. I will have to hang my head in shame while telling you what I make for him to eat at lunch because you will say oh no she's one of THOSE mothers but here goes. All very easy and he adores it and will actually eat most of it:

-cheese quesidillas the littleloca way with a shoutout to my homies! ;p

baked beans on toast (sounds awful but it's actually good --finding the baked beans is hard though)

baby quiche's (bought frozen of course...he'd never eat a homemade one in a million years)

pizza (I do homemade ones on Friday nights--easy to do and you can sneak in veg's. He loves them!)

anything fried (horrible but I do try to fool him with good quality fish "fake" fried in cornmeal and yogurt from time to time...otherwise it's chicken nuggets fried the old fashioned way + ketchup...I know, I know...bad mommy!)

oh and guacamole which I make really well and he loves! He adores avocados.

How about toad-in-the-hole? Cut a circular hole in a piece of bread, put it in a frying pan and crack and egg into it.

I'm struggling with this myself since I send my 17 month old off to his sitter with a packed lunch.

Our staples are: cream cheese sandwiches, leftover macaroni and cheese (I make a big batch on Sunday evenings), and veggie burgers. Oh, and copious amounts of apple sauce.

I used to love couscous with tomatoes and kiri cheese. Well small boy 2.5 years loved it. They don't each much anyhow and that is a fast one!

Also cheese with some crackers and some veggies and fruit. So quick and pretty good...

And yes finally a work permit!

Thanks for all the good ideas everybody. Project Make Lunch More Interesting (And Easier For The Mama) will being this week.

Lillian and Karinsamira - yay for Swiss moms who don't always make hot lunches! That makes me feel so much better!

Betsy and Misschrisc - a big pot of soup sounds good - he does like to eat soup though he's a holy mess when he's done.

Rubber duckie - toad in a hole sounds interesting, though I can picture Small Boy rejecting it.

Brooklyn Girl - can you believe Small Boy doesn't like Mac and cheese? At least last time we tried it - in the US - he didn't.

Peanut butter and banana sandwhich on wheat bread. Protein, fruit and grain all in one handy package. Put a little margarine or butter on the bread first so the sticky peanut butter is easier to swallow.

Grilled cheese sandwhich too.
