2 x Ja

Briefly: Swiss voters approved joining Schengen-Dublin Sunday. And 58% of voters approved the registration of same-sex relationships (see same article) at the national level (gays and lesbians already have this right in some cantons), creating legal rights for these couples in financial matters, although same sex couples still will not be allowed to adopt or to avail themselves of fertility treatment (grrr).

Something less brief to come after the Small Boy goes to sleep.

I had mixed feelings on the Schengen-Dublin vote but sometimes one has to choose the lesser of two evils. Was an easy choice about creating legal rights for gays and lesbians. The right (and not surprisingly the christian right) was trying to create fears about the usual. Glad that the majority of Swiss showed that they believe in an open society.

Some of the English language press is calling the Swiss yes on Schengen as going against the "prevailing mood" in Europe - the French and Dutch said no to the constitution but the Swiss said yes to Schengen. I'm not sure the two had anything to do with each other. I also think some of the Swiss yes vote was driven by a desire to control the asylum situation, which matches some of the French and Dutch no voters basing their no votes on fears about further immigration into those countries. I'm interested to see how the Swiss press reports on the vote. Reading the German language papers will require a good Small Boy nap, however...
